The spring inside a roller blind tube does one job: it stores energy as you pull the blind down and releases it to roll the blind back up. When the spring tension is wrong — either too weak or too strong — the whole blind misbehaves. A blind with too little tension won't retract fully or rolls back slowly, sagging partway up. A blind with too much tension snaps back hard and can jerk the fabric off the bottom rail. When You Need Spring or Tensioning Repair
The blind rolls back up too slowly or stops halfway — this is the most common sign of a weakened spring. The tension has dropped to the point where it can no longer overcome the weight of the fabric and bottom rail, especially on larger blinds.
The blind snaps back hard when you release it, or retracts so fast it's difficult to control. This means the spring has too much tension — either it was never adjusted correctly or the blind has lost weight (worn fabric) while the spring stayed the same.
The blind rolls unevenly — one side winds up faster than the other, causing the fabric to twist or bunch in the housing. This can be a spring alignment issue or a problem with how the tube sits in the end caps.
The blind won't lock in the down position and keeps creeping back up. This is a tensioning or locking mechanism issue — the spring is fighting against the hold position rather than working with it.
Our Spring & Tensioning Repair Process
We remove the blind from the brackets and inspect the tube, spring cartridge, and end caps. For spring-loaded blinds, we check the spring tension by feel and by testing the retraction speed — a correctly tensioned spring should roll the blind up steadily without slamming.
In many cases, the spring tension can be adjusted without replacing the spring — we add or remove turns to dial in the correct tension for the blind weight and size. When the spring has fatigued beyond adjustment or is physically broken, we replace the spring cartridge and reset the tension from scratch.
After the repair, we rehang the blind and test it through multiple cycles — raising and lowering it to confirm it holds position at any point in its travel and retracts at the correct speed. We also check the bottom rail for alignment and confirm the fabric is tracking straight in the guides.
