Cord-operated outdoor blinds use a pull rope threaded through a pulley system to lower and raise the blind. The cord takes the full weight of the blind every time you operate it, and in Perth's conditions that cord has a hard life. Direct sun degrades the polymer fibres, the cord runs through plastic or metal pulleys that can corrode or seize, and the sheer repetition of daily use wears through the material at the pulley contact points. A fraying cord gives you some warning — a snapped cord leaves you with a blind stuck in position and no way to move it. Signs Your Cord or Pulley Needs Attention

The pull cord is visibly fraying — you can see individual strands breaking apart, usually at the point where the cord contacts the pulley. This is the warning stage. A fraying cord is under stress and will snap under load, often while the blind is deployed in a storm.

The cord has snapped completely. The blind is now stuck — either fully deployed and unable to retract, or partly up with no way to lower it. Either way, the blind is unusable until the cord is replaced and rethreaded through the pulley system.

The cord is stiff or difficult to pull. This usually means a pulley has seized — corrosion or UV-degraded plastic has caused the pulley wheel to stop rotating, so the cord is dragging rather than running smoothly. Pulling harder damages the cord faster and eventually burns through it.

The cord has tangled or jumped off the pulley. Wind events can cause the cord to wind around itself or exit the pulley groove. The blind may still move in one direction but not the other, or the cord feeds out from the wrong position.

We assess both the cord and the pulley system together. Replacing just the cord on a seized pulley leads to the same problem again quickly — the friction that destroyed the first cord will destroy the replacement just as fast.

We thread the new cord through the full pulley run, checking each pulley wheel for free rotation and smooth groove condition. Seized or cracked pulleys are replaced. The cord is secured at both ends and adjusted so the blind operates with even tension from any position.

We test the blind through multiple cycles and confirm the locking action works correctly. Some cord-operated blinds use a locking cleat or clutch that the cord runs through — we check this as part of the repair to make sure the blind holds position when deployed.
