Side-winding outdoor blinds use a small gearbox to translate the turning motion of the handle into the up-and-down movement of the blind. That gearbox takes a lot of force — particularly on larger blinds where the fabric weight puts real load on the mechanism. Perth's outdoor conditions are hard on plastic and aluminium components. Heat cycling through summer and winter causes gearbox housings to expand and contract, lubricants to dry out, and internal gears to wear faster than they would in a milder climate. When the winder becomes stiff, grinds, or turns freely without moving the blind, the gearbox has failed. Call (08) 6491 9423 to arrange an inspection and replacement.
Signs Your Gearbox Needs Replacing
The winder handle turns but the blind doesn't move — the gears inside have stripped and the drive is no longer connecting to the tube. This is a definitive gearbox failure and the blind won't work again until the unit is replaced.
The winder is very stiff and requires much more force than it used to. Internal gears are dry, corroded, or partially seized. This often progresses to full failure if left unaddressed, and the extra force required can also damage the tube end fittings.
The winder makes a grinding or clicking noise when turned. Debris has entered the housing, a gear tooth has cracked, or internal plastic components are breaking down. The noise is a warning — the mechanism will fail completely before long.
The gearbox housing is visibly cracked or broken. UV exposure causes plastic gearbox housings to become brittle over time. A cracked housing lets moisture in and causes the internal mechanism to corrode rapidly.
Our Gearbox Replacement Process
We identify the gearbox model fitted to your blind — this varies by blind manufacturer and installation year. We carry replacement gearboxes suited to common Perth outdoor blind brands. If the unit is less common, we can source it and return for the replacement.
We remove the existing winder assembly, disconnect the gearbox from the tube end fitting, and fit the replacement. The new gearbox is lubricated and the handle is reattached. We test the full travel of the blind — up and down — before signing off on the repair.
We also check the tube end fittings and the bracket that holds the winder in place. A failed gearbox that has been forced sometimes damages the surrounding components. If anything else needs attention, we'll quote it separately.
Jammed Shutter Repair Cost in Perth
Cost depends on what caused the jam and whether any parts were damaged. A simple debris blockage can be cleared quickly. A jammed shutter with buckled slats or a damaged guide rail will take longer and require parts. We quote before starting any repair work so you know what you're up for. Emergency or after-hours callouts carry a priority response fee.
